Description

The UNESCO declared Sigiriya as a world heritage site and it is truly one of the most attractive destinations of Sri Lanka. This destination is a fine example of ancient urban planning. Sigirya is the most visited historic site in Sri Lanka. Sigiriya is situated in the Matale district in the center, near the town called Dambula. According to history, this region was chosen by the King Kasyapa to serve as his new capital. There is an enormous gateway shaped like that of a lion and the place derives its name from this gateway. This place also served as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.

How To Reach

Take a flight toBandaranaike International Airport and then take a cab to reach Sigiriya. The journey will take around 3.5 h to reach a distance of 160km.

Best Time to Visit

February to April has moderate climate and is generally the best time to visit.

Visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Ridurangala Rock, Sigiriya Museum, Dambulla Temple, Minneriya National Park, Kaudulla National Park, Royal Gardens, Lion's paws.
Go for a walk, cycling, and experience a hot air balloon ride. The adventurous ones can go for Sigiriya rock climbing.
Visit the town of Polonnaruwa, take a day trip to Anuradhapura, take a sunbath at Trincomalee, etc.
