Description

Dzongu is a hidden treasure in North Sikkim. Dzongu is a slice of paradise inhabited by the Lepchas. From the little clusters of villages in the beautiful Dzongu valley, one can marvel at the breathtaking view of the colossal Kanchenjunga. You not only visit Dzongu for the scenary but also for the people- Lepchas and know their culture and traditions. Dzonguhas the Teesta River in the southeast,Tholung Chu River in the northeast and by the mighty mountains in the west. It borders the Kangchenjunga Biosphere Reserve. The entire region divides in upper Dzongu and the lower Dzongu.

Duration

Distance: 710km from Kolkata.
Time: 6hrs from NJP/Siliguri/Bagdogra and 4.5 hr from Pakyong. You can take a train to NJP or a flight to Bagdogra or Pakyong from Kolkata.

Best Time to Visit

Summer is a great time to be in Dzongu because of the pleasant weather. The sun shine brightly and you can catch a clear view of the Kanchenjunga range. It is also a great time to spot many colorful birds. In addition, it is a great time to indulge in the outdoor activities.
Winter is also offers a clear view of the mountains. However, it can be severely cold during that time.

Tips

Take a village walk explore the Lepcha way of life, their food, agricultural practices, their cardamom plantations, and culture. See the wonderful lake decorated with prayer flags and canopy of trees around at HeeGyathang. The lake has many silver fish too. You love the bond Lepchas share with the nature.
Visit the Kusheong Valley, Lepcha Museum, TholungMonastry, Lingzey Waterfalls, the Traditional Bamboo Bridge by the Lepchas, their hot springs and cane and bamboo center.
You can go for trekking, fishing, bird and butterfly watching, and medicinal plant tours.
Munch on Khabze, which is a homemade fried snack and take a sip of Chhaang, the traditional homemade millet beer.
