Description

Shillong is the capital city of the State as well as the District headquarter of East Khasi Hills District. Shillong is the only hill station in the country that is accessible from all sides. The name Shillong is derived from Lei-Shyllong, a powerful deity who is worshipped at the Shillong Peak.
A beautiful city encircled by pine treesand situated at an altitude of 1,491m above sea level, Shillong provides a relief from the heat across the country. This hill station is known for its picturesque sights and traditions. This place is also known as the 'Scotland of the East'.
Shillongis also the home to numerous waterfalls. The lofty mountain peaks, crystal-clear lakes, breathtakingly beautiful golf courses, museums and the zoo are the key reasons why people visit Shillong. Apart from the natural beauty, Shillong also acts as the gateway to Meghalaya, the state famous for heavy rainfalls, caving, tallest waterfalls, beautiful landscapes and amazing people and culture. Shillong in particular has been in limelight for its jovial people and their culture. Interestingly, Shillong has a very westernized culture and it has a very young feel to it.

How To Reach

The nearest airport is the Umroi Airport also called the Shillong Airport, located at a distance of 30km from Shillong. Other options are Guwahati airport or Guwahati railway station, from where it takes 3.5 h to reach Shillong by car covering a distance of 100km.

Shillong experiences a soothing climate throughout the year. The light drizzles and the cold wind makes Shillong very pleasant and enjoyable for tourists.
Winter is the best time to enjoy a trip to Shillong.
