Description

Buxa was once famous for dolomite mining but now it is more popular because of its Tiger Reserve. Located in the Assam-Bhutan border, Buxa has an area of 745 sq km, the largest forest and one of the oldest settlements in North Bengal. Buxa has the second highest tiger population in West Bengal after Sunderbans. The park holds many elephant, Indian bison, leopard, many species of deer and many smaller mammals, innumerable species of birds and reptiles. Buxa is rich with bio-diversity and has a great collection of rare orchids and medicinal plants.

Duration

Distance: Almost 700km from Kolkata.
Time: 10 hours by train and 50 min by flight from Kolkata to NJP and Bagdogra respectively. From there, it takes almost 3 hours by car to reach Buxa.

Best Time to Visit

Winter season between December and February is the best time to visit Buxa due to the pleasant weather conditions with low humidity. During Monsoon, the sanctuary remains closed.

Tips

Visit Buxa Fort and Rover's Point. Trek lovers can walk further to Roopam valley bordering Bhutan.
Also visit Lepchaka, Pokhri Hills, Mahakal Caves etc.
Jungle Safari to the Buxa Tier Reserve is a must thing to do.
