Description

Lachen is atown in North Sikkim and the name means 'big pass'. Lachen forms the base for Gurudongmar Lake and Chopta Valley. Lachen is also the sister village of Lachung in North Sikkim.Lachen stands on a grassy and bushy flat land separated by deep gorges of Lachen-Chu River from where the pine clad mountains with their snowy peaks and black cliffs rise majestically.

Duration

Distance: 750km from Kolkata.
Time: Around 8.5hr from NJP/Bagdogra/ SIliguri, and 6hr from Pakyong. Take a train to NJP from Kollata or a flight to either Bagdogra or Pakyong.

Best Time to Visit

April to May is a great time to go as the rhododendrons are in full bloom during this time, and Yumthang Valley lives up to its name - the valley of flowers. Moreover, summer sees yak race in Thangu Valley and the mild and pleasant cool weather allow you to take part in other outdoor activities.
Another good time is during Losar festival between February and March. This is when the locals in their full traditional costumes eat, drink and perform many cultural shows. Onset of winter is also a great time as you can see the monks performing mask dance at Lachung monastery.
