Description

Thangusituated at a very high altitude of 13000ftstays covered mostly in a blanket of snow throughout the year. However, the winter whiteness turns to a collage of numerous shades in May with the commencement of the blossoming season.It is scenic place and blissful tranquility prevails there. Thangu Valley comprises several alpine meadows and the shimmering water of Teesta River and dotted quaint houses offer a picturesque sight to watch. Other rivers are Chopta, Thangu and Lassu flowing across the valley.
Thangu valley is a small village where the visitors usually acclimatize before they proceed to Gurudongmar Lake, Muguthang and Cho Lhamu.

Duration

Distance: 790km from Kolkata.
Time: Take a train to NJP from Kollata or a flight to either Bagdogra or Pakyong. It takes 10hr from NJP/SIliguri/Bagdogra and 8hr from Pakyong Airport to reach Thangu by car. The journey can be long and tiresome and requires halt. Tourists usually travel to Thangu from Lachen. (2hr)

Best Time to Visit

Summers are delightful and charming and offers a great scope to explore the region in and around Thangu.
Snow lovers love Thangu as the fair beauty looks white washed during the months of winter. The frozen Gurudongmar Lake is a remarkable sight. Moreover, one can see some of the stunning views of the snow-clad mountains around.

Tips

Go for short trek to Chopta Valley, Green Lake and Muguthang.
Thangu has a large military base as the place is close to the Chinese boarder. On your way to Gurudongmar Lake, you will find the last civilian settlement.
The cold can be extremely severe, so make sure to carry enough protection of warm clothes to save from the piercing cold weather.
