Lepchajat is a small beautiful village located in the wilderness just 19km away from Darjeeling. As the name suggests, it once used to be a hamlet of the Lepcha tribes. The word 'Jagat' actually means "the world', so it was the World of the Lepchas. Now, the land has been taken over by West Bengal Forest Development Corporationwhich is promoting tourism. Lepchajagat, still considered as an off-beat destination is a land covered in dense forested area full with pines, oaks and rhododendrons. Combined with this is the magnificent views of Kanchenjunga peaks, wonderful birdlife and serene tranquility.
Distance: 617km from Kolkata.
Time: 10 hours by train and 50 in by flight from Kolkata to NJP and Bagdogra Airport respectively. From both NP and Bagdogra Airport, it takes about 2 ½ hours to reach Lepchajagat by car.
Winter (November to February) is the best time to visit this place because of cool and pleasant weather and low humidity
