Description

Namchi which literally means 'sky high' is located in South Sikkim and is slowly emerging as a popular tourist destination. Namchi offers an unmatched view of the Kanchenjunga range and the Rangit valley. The 135 feet high gigantic statue of Guru Padamasambhava present at Samdruptse near Namchi is the highest statue of Guru Padamasambhava in the world. Samdruptse in Bhutia language means 'wish fulfilling hill'. Dalai Lama laid the foundation stone of the statue in October 1997.
Namchi, though a small town is the epitome of culture, diversity, and religion. Namchi is blessed with welcoming monasteries, traditional temples, and lush green surroundings and forests.

Duration

Distance: 670km from Kolkata.
Time: You can either take a train to NJP station or land at the Bagdogra Airport. From both NJP and Bagdogra, it will take 4.5 hours almost to reach Namchi by car. You can also take a flight from Kolkata to the new Pakyong Airport. From Pakyong, it will take 3 hours to reach Namchi by car.

Best Time to Visit

Summer in Namchi is pleasant and is great for performing outdoor activities. The temperature usually varies between 4 degrees and 12 degrees during Summer time.
In winter, the weather in Namchi becomes a lot chilly with temperatures hovering between 8 degrees and 15 degrees. Visitors who wish to explore Namchi during this time are advised to carry heavy woolen clothes.

Adventure seekers can go for a trek from Damthang to Tendong, Hilley to Versey and Ravangla to Mainom routes.
