Gaya and Bodhgaya

 
Description

Gaya is of immense historical significance and is one of the major tourist attractions of the state of Bihar. The city is surrounded on three sides by small, rocky hills, with the Phalgu River on its fourthor eastern side. The waterbed of the river is below ground level and only the sandy surface is visible along the riverbed. It is a very sacred river for the Hindus.
Gaya district is mentioned in the great epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. It is the place where Rama along with Sita and Lakshmana, came to offer pind-daan for their father, Dasharath, and continues to be a major Hindu pilgrimage site for the pind-daan ritual. Bodh Gaya, where Lord Buddha reached his enlightened stage, is one of the four holy sites of Buddhism. The Mahabodhi Temple complex at Bodh Gaya is a World Heritage site.

424km is the aerial distance and 458km is the rail distance between Kolkata and Gaya.
From Patna, Gaya is around 120km by car.
It takes 4h by car from Patna to Gaya. Train journey from Kolkata to Gaya takes around 8 to 9h.
