Description

The U-shaped glacial valley of Gangtey is one of the most beautiful locations in Bhutan. The surprise of finding such a wide, flat valley without any trees after a journey through dense forests and rich vegetation is a fascinating one. This destinationoffers a rare experience in Bhutan. A few kilometers beyond the Gangtey Monastery, lies the village of Phobjikha on the floor of the Gangtey Valley.This place is the winter home of black necked cranes that migrate from the arid plains in the north to pass winter in milder and lower climate. Phobjikha, lies on the periphery of the Black Mountain National Park and it boasts of two beautiful meandering rivers, NakayChhu and Gay Chhu.

How To Reach

Take a flight to Bhutan's only international airport in Paro. From Paro, it takes 5h to reach Phobjikha by car. The distance between Paro and Phobjikha is around 185km. This is the best and the most convenient way of reaching Phobjikha/Gangtey Valley.
You can also take a car from Phuntsholing located at a distance of 280km to reach Phobjikha. However, the journey can be a prolonged one for around 8h. It is better to halt in between the journey preferably Thimpu or Paro from where it takes 4 to 5h to reach Phobjikha and Gangtey Valley.

Best Time to Visit

For low altitude treks, November, December, January, February and early March are the best times. For tourists interested in the endangered black-necked cranes, it is suggested to visit the Phobjikha Valley between late October and mid-February.
