Description

Kargil is located at a distance of 205 kilometers from Srinagar and is second largest town in Ladakh district of Jammu and Kashmir. Kargil is at an altitude of 2,676 metres and is situated along the banks of the Suru River. It is located 60 km and 204 km away from Drass and Srinagar to the west respectively, 234 km from Leh to the east, 240 km from Padum to the southeast and 1,047 km from Delhi to the south. Like other areas in the Himalayas, Kargil has a continental climate. Summers are cool with frigid nights, while winters are long and chilly with temperatures often dropping to -48C.

How To Reach

Kargil is connected to the rest of India only by roads. There is no direct flight or rail connectivity, although you can take a flight for Leh / Srinagar, and then take a cab for the same. The nearest railway station is in Jammu, which is around 485 km. from the district.

Best Time to Visit

Summer is the best season for a visit to Kargil. The months when Kargil is open for a trip are from March - October. The freezing cold winters, along with the dangerous monsoons, is not the best season if you want to have a taste of the district that is Kargil.

Visit Mulbekh monastery, Drass War Memorial, Suru Basin, Lamayuru monastery, etc.
Adventure minded people could also try from Trek in Kargil. A number of treks originate in and around Kargil. These are Lamayuru-Leh, Padum-Lamayuru, Padum-Hemis, Sankaru-Dras, NunKun etc. Trekking in the region may be challenging due to the weather conditions, but rewarding because of the beautiful setting of the region.
