Jhalong is an off-beat wonder of Dooars. Jhalong is a small village situated on the banks of River Jaldhaka, near India-Bhutan border in the Kalimpong district in West Bengal. A Hydro Electricity Project is constructed on the Jaldhaka River and it acts as a bridge for crossing over to Bhutan. It is the first hydroelectric project in India and a major attraction in this area. Bird lovers can enjoy a varied collection of hill birds includes Kingfisher, Brown Dipper, Redstart, Laughing Thrush as well as migratory waterfowl here.
Distance: 640km from Kolkata.
Time: 10 hours by train and 50 min by flight from Kolkata to NJP and Bagdogra respectively. From there, it takes almost 3 hours by car to reach Jhalong. From Garumara, it takes an hour to visit the site of Jhalong.
Winter season between December and February is the best time to visit Jhalong due to the pleasant weather conditions with low humidity. During Monsoon, the sanctuary and the national parks remains closed.
