Description

Ansupa Lake is the largest and one of the oldest fresh water wetland of Odisha located in Athgarh Forest Division. Ansupa Lake is directly linked with the River Mahanadi by a channel called KabulaNala, through which water of river Mahanadi enters the lake. Ansupa Lake is spread over an area that varies from 375 acres to 385 acres. Average depth of water is about 8 to 10 meters at present. This Lake is of National importance due to its unique biodiversity. It holds varied aquatic fauna and flora and is a famous natural heritage site of Odisha. It harbors large number of fishes, and aquatic plants.
Numerous and various types of resident and migratory birds visit the lake in winter. A very old fort called Saranda Fort built during Keshari dynasty was built near the lake on western side on Saranda Hills. Many old remnants of stone architecture are there on the hilltop, which are locally known as Armory House. A hillock named Saranda hill runs along the western bank of Lake Ansupa and adds greatly to the scenic beauty of Ansupa Lake.

How To Reach

You can connect to Ansupa from Bhubaneswar, which is located 54km away. It takes 1.5 h to reach Ansupa by road from Bhubaneswar. The nearest airport is also in Bhubaneswar.
